The Kick-Off Meeting of the ANEMONE Project brought together experts collaborating for the protection of the Black Sea
During 22-23 October 2018, the partners in the ANEMONE Project (Assessing the
vulnerability of the Black Sea marine ecosystem to human pressures) met in Constanta for the Kick-Off Meeting.
The ANEMONE Project aims to deliver, through collaborative efforts among partners, a common strategy related to the
Joint Monitoring of the Black Sea, using the most adequate common agreed assessment criteria and indicators, in order
to assess the status of the Black Sea, as a basis for further actions.
The project is coordinated by the National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa” (NIMRD) (Romania), with partners from Romania (Mare Nostrum Non-Governmental Organization), Bulgaria (Institute of Oceanology - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences - IO-BAS), Turkey (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey – Marmara Research Center – TUBITAK-MAM – and Turkish Marine Research Foundation – TUDAV) and Ukraine (Ukrainian Scientific Center of Ecology of Sea - UkrSCES).
On 22 October 2018, the meeting was opened by dr. Tania Zaharia, NIMRD’s Scientific Director, who congratulated the consortium for the hard work in drawing-up the successful proposal and wished everyone good luck in implementing the Action. An overview of the ANEMONE Project was presented by the Coordinator, dr. Laura Boicenco, after which the work package leaders summarized the objectives and activities to be undertaken in each WP, as follows:
- WP-T1 - Monitoring: Current situation, needs, requirements for improvement, revision – dr. Valentina Todorova (IO-BAS, Bulgaria);
- WP-T2 – Field work: conducting pilot monitoring studies in selected study area – dr. Luminiţa Lazar (NIMRD, Romania);
- WP-T3 – Seafood safety in Black Sea region – dr. Andra Oros (NIMRD, Romania);
- WP-T4 - Enhance stakeholders and public awareness on environmental issues - Mihaela Candea-Mirea (Mare Nostrum NGO, Romania);
- WP-C - Communication – dr. Mariana Golumbeanu (NIMRD, Romania).
As a good practice example for the ANEMONE consortium, dr. Evangelos Papathanassiou, Greece, member of the Steering Committee and external adviser, delivered the presentation “Successful monitoring in the Black Sea. A journey to enjoy!”. The day was concluded with the first Steering Committee Meeting.
The following day, on 23 October, parallel working sessions were carried out, aimed and planning the activities under each work package. Thus, for each WP, the partners discussed and agreed on the preparing, scheduling and budgeting all activities foreseen by ANEMONE. At the end of this hands-on session, all WP reported in a plenary meeting.
The ANEMONE Kick-Off meeting was attended by more than 30 participants, representing all partner institutions.
ANEMONE is funded through the Joint Operational Programme Black Sea Basin 2014-2020, Programme priority: 2.
