p. 15 - 22 NEW OBSERVATIONS ON SUPERFICIAL CIRCULATION IN THE WESTERN PART OF THE BLACK SEA G. Serpoianu, F. Smocov and V. Malciu Romanian Marine Research Institute Constanta Abstract The paper presents the results of an experiment with floats (drifting bottles) carried out on August 2, 1988, in the central area of the Romanian littoral of the Black Sea, about 30 miles seaward. A number of 870 floats have been launched and 225 of them were recovered along the entire western part of the Black Sea from Odessa to Bosporus and in the southern part from Bosporus to Sinop. In order to explain the floats routes, daily resultants of the wind direction and speed have been calculated, for the month of August, at Constantza. We emphasize that 67% of the total floats were recovered in this month. This experiment follows another one, more ample (5940 floats launched in 3 stages, June, July and August 1976, whose results have been published by SERPOIANU and NAE 1977).
